The transition to motherhood wasn’t exactly a smooth one for me. To the outside world, everything seemed great. However, inside I was crumbling. I was overwhelmed and struggling with the constant demands of motherhood while also carrying a heavy load of grief from the sudden loss of my father two years earlier. I was stuck in a cycle of overreacting then beating myself up with negative self-talk. I was easily frustrated and short with my partner and kids. Everything felt like a battle.
I’d been following Benita on socials and loved her open and easy approach to motherhood. Joining a program like Illuminate was all quite new for me and stepping into a group of women I didn’t know brought up some anxiety around being judged but everyone was so welcoming. Benita has this way of making you feel really comfortable in her presence and she created such a great safe space to share and learn in, after my initial nerves, it all felt so comfortable.
Committing to the program forced me to put time aside for myself – the fortnightly calls, tools and lessons were the catalyst to realise it was ok to put myself first. On every call, I’d have aha moments the whole way through. I’d leave feeling full of energy – and be hanging out for the next one.
The biggest change for me has been how I deal with challenges that pop up in everyday life. A couple of years ago I’d meltdown and spend days dwelling in negative self-talk. Now I can let myself feel something and move on. I’ve got the tools to stop the negative spirals, to keep moving forward and learn from it.
I use what Benita taught us on a daily basis and it’s made such a huge difference in my life. My head is so much quieter now and I’m a lot calmer with my kids. We have better communication and talk more openly, without as much conflict. I absolutely recommend Benita’s work and the Illuminate program.
After the birth of her second child, Renee found herself struggling to adjust to motherhood. She’d also recently lost her beloved father, and had moved house, everything felt overwhelming to say the least.

After years of negative self-talk and big emotions, Renee can now let herself feel her feelings and move on quickly. She has the tools to stop the negative self-talk in its tracks so she can keep moving forward and learn from the challenges that come up.
